Timer with something attached?

I came home to a timer that didnt work. I'm still troubleshooting. My timer is not turning and I dont find power at any of the wires. I'm thinking the problem may be in the circuit before the timers, but I thought I'd replace this timer. Its about 20 years old. I took it out and found this canister attached to the back of it. I dont see this device in any photos of the timer on line. It's an Intermatic T104M. Anybody have any Idea what this is? The pool was built around 2002 and has a system that sends signals through the house wiring that controls the lights.

Is that an X-10 system?

The round thing could be a Phase Coupler Signal Bridge that sends the power line control signal from one hot wire to the other since 120V devices only connect to one hot wire.

I think ajw22 got it. The controller says x10 on it so I guess it is x10. I also found another one in the box so thanks. Seems odd they soldered it to the contacts on the back of the timer instead of wiring it to the lugs that connect the other wiring.

That location was probably the easiest to access for connecting both legs of the power to the Phase Coupler Signal Bridge without going into the main CB panel.
