threaded pvc leaks

What type of pvc thread sealant do you guys use? I had to replace my 6 way valve on my sand filter and I used some rector seal thread sealant and the threads on both connections are leaking. I used a liberal amount on the male and female threads per the instructions. I made sure the threads were clean prior to applying. I know there has to be something better out there. I've made 2 attempts with this stuff with the same results and ready to try something different.
Thanks.

Thread tape is meant to be more of a lubricant to allow you to fully seat the threads. It does seem to work well on smaller fittings, but on larger fittings like +1" The Rectorseal usually works better than tape.

I typically use the Blue Monster thread tape as well (1½" PVC) with good results. However, I have had a couple of fittings over the years that just did not want to seal 'drip free'.
What I finally found that worked wonders was the Plasto Joint Stick this finally sealed even my most troubling thread leaks.

1) make sure the fittings are bone dry
2) apply the stick (it's somewhat tacky) liberally & perpendicular to the threads
3) after making the connections, allow the fittings to sit for hour or so before pressurizing system.

Best of luck in finding a solution for you.

This discussion continues on TFP now for more than 12 years. I will say this, "If you absolutely, positively know the only way to seal a threaded PVC joint, you are wrong."

I personally use Teflon pipe thread sealant and I am absolutely positive it is the only way to correctly make that connection. :laughblue: :laughblue:

Thread sealant or tape, they all work when applied properly
