Added 40 lbs of calcium’s chloride dissolved in bucket poured Around pool and brushed

Added 1/2 gal muriatic acid

Added 15 lbs basing soda

I cannot figure out why the PH keeps floating up.

Will re test in about 3 hours.

Calcium is not needed in a vinyl pool unless you have a gas heater.

Stop with the baking soda, that just raises TA. High TA and low pH cause pH rise. You are fighting yourself with acid and baking soda additions.

Do this:
  1. TA > 80 --> When pH gets to 8.0, lower your pH to 7.6. pH will rise. When pH gets to 8.0, lower to 7.6 again. This will lower TA over time.
  2. TA is between 60 and 80 --> DON'T lower pH to 7.6. pH will be fairly stable between 7.8 and 8.0. If it is stable at 7.8, 7.9 or 8.0, leave pH alone.

Thanks-‘quick question-I have a gas heater I just don’t use it much bc the pool is 82 F Just from sun exposure. Do I need to be careful of calcium if the heater isn’t heating ?

I was trying to balance PH and TA. What number should i shoot for of TA before I start to manage PH - thanks

Yes because water is still flowing through the element.

Right now both are fine. But as noted above, when the pH hits 8.0, lower it a bit to about 7.5-7.6. That will be good for the pH and also help lower the TA slightly. Your TA has lots of flexibility, but I wouldn't let it go higher than 80.
