The Mystery of the SWG

We bought a house last Fall as pool season was ending. Sellers told us they built the pool and it was “salt water”. Same company that built pool has been continuously maintaining it for the last 7 years. After we closed on the house, I had the same pool company come out and kind of show me what the equipment did and how to work it. I kept them on for weekly cleaning. The technician that came out for that initial instruction said “hmm, your salt sensor is missing”. Once we moved in the house, I started shadowing pool cleaner (different guy) asking him about equipment and chemicals. He said he had been taking care of pool about 3 years and never added salt - only chlorine. I called pool company and they have no idea why/when salt sensor was removed but they looked back at last 2 years of service records and they did not add any salt. I called previous homeowners who are clueless and thought it was chlorinated with salt the whole time. No recollection of switching to chlorine only - but they were very hands off. They just let pool company do everything. Sooo, I have a Jandy salt cell. The sensor is missing. How could I find out if cell still works? Sensor is pretty cheap and (maybe) easy to install. Is there a way to test the cell to see if it’s bad?

What is the cell serial number?

Look at the center plate really well for any signs of corrosion. Use a flashlight to get a good look.

Disconnect the power cord from the cell and check the prongs.

Does the cell have 2 or 3 prongs?

What is the box serial number?

Where is the center plate?

It has 3 prongs (There is some blue corrosion in the plug - see photo)

The blue is anti-corrosion gel. It's supposed to be there.

There are 13 plates inside the cell. Look at the edges of the plates from both sides to see if the edges are corroded.

Assuming that the 14 in the cell serial number means made in 2014, I would say that the cell is probably not going to be good.

I would get a new PLC1400 kit, which comes with the new cell, power cord and trisensor.

Like this? Jandy PLC1400 PureLink Cell Kit | Swimming Pool Supply USA

Any thoughts on non-Jandy replacement? Only asking because Jandy has 1 year warranty and this has 5 year.

You need the cell, trisensor and power cord.

You can buy the parts separately or as a kit.

The kit part number is PLC1400.

The 1400 cell has 13 plates inside and 3 prongs outside. It's (2) sets of 7 plates, but the center plate goes to both sets. So, there's only 13 actual plates.

The 700 cell has 7 plates inside and 2 prongs outside.

Make sure that you get the 1400 cell and not the 700 cell.
