The husband finally let me take over and I don't want to blow it!!

If you are interested about how an actual heat pump works, here is a youtube video illustrating this nicely (I'm more of a visual learner).
This video shows how a heat pump works as both a Heater or an Air Conditioner for the house. The concept of heat pump for the pool is exactly the same as a heat pump for the house, the difference is that for the pool you're heating (or cooling) water, whereas for the house you're heating (or cooling) air.

Here's a Wikipedia article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pump

Hayward will email you a nice comparison of the estimated costs for heat pumps vs heaters.

So is a gas fired heater like a water heater but with no tank? And does it make it less efficient than a heat pump? I read the wikipedia link and looked at the video that fklash linked and understand a little of the process. I sent in the comparrison, thank you!
Love to learn! (Althought it gets more difficult these days)

One of the things to remember about pool water heating, no matter the heater type, is this - you can only raise the water temperature of a pool a few degrees above the ambient air temperature (perhaps 4-6oF) before the heat loss from water evaporation starts to take over (assuming a low relative humidity which is true for the OP in Reno, NV). So the best thing you can do to keep your pool water warm (and your wallet less empty) is to make sure the pool is covered when heating and especially at night when the air temperature drops considerably.

I got results but Hayward estimated my pool at 21500 gallons where TFP pool math est. at 25900. At any rate, it explained the huge energy bill jump. (how do I transfer the est here? take a pic of it and imgr it?)

Yeah, that Hayward estimator is total bunk. They got everything wrong. My NG costs are way lower than that and where I am, gas heating is A LOT CHEAPER than electric heating even in the dead of winter. I think they're just trying to sell heat pumps.

Yes, I tend to agree. But in general, I guess heat pumps are more energy efficient than gas fired heaters which explains the significant bump in our energy bill:mad:
So I'll just follow the 4-6 degree guideline and keep the pool covered at night.....and DEFINITELY do not heat when below 50 degrees outside!
Thank you all for the addnl info!

So now the question is: is there a TFL (Trouble Free Lawn) site?? My first baby (the lawn) has been feeling very neglected since the new baby came along and is acting out big time Lol!!

Also, how do I add a pic to my avatar? Can I use imgr? After my first few fiascos using the upload image option I'm afraid to go that route again.

Hey! I might be gettin the whole thing about once I get rid of the "greenies" I won't have to do it again. For the last 6 days I've noticed that the FC loss has not been more that 1ppm and the CC has gone from .5 to <.5 to now 0. I've tested at 6:30 am and if the FC loss was 1 added 32 oz of Clorox (per pool math), but I've only had to do that twice this week. I am still using the FAS/DPD since I'm keeping the FC at 6-7. The pH has drifted up to 7.5 on its own (did not add Borax after my muriatic acid overdose).
After my wild ride gettin here I can't believe how calm and serene my pool has been. I love it!

I'm thinking since the FC has stayed rather constant and the CC is <.5 - 0, I will let the FC come down to 5 - 6 range?
Would anyone recommend I bring the pH down to 7.2 since my CH is still high and I'm concerned about scaling? Other #s:
CH 625 TA 70 CSI 0.06

Thanks!

that is really great, I am so happy for you :)

ok, your TA is 70 so lets see if your ph stays about 7.5/.6 on its own, watch it.. if it goes up to 7.8 take it back down to 7.2 and see if it will stay down.. you are trying to find a "sweet" spot for your TA and PH where it stays under 7.5 or so :)

ok, thank you, you have always given me god advise so I'll do it!

The acceptable range for the CSI is between -0.6 and +0.6. You are at +0.06. That's a long way from worrying about scaling. Like ten times your current test result. If you do want to keep it slightly on the negative side of zero (due to your past scaling), then yes bring the pH down.
