I’m loving this new temperature probe I got today. Promise this isn’t a disguised ad. I’ve read others having good results from Wireless Sensor Tags outdoor probe. I zip tied it to the underside of my slimmer cover and shrink wrapped a plastic cover around it for extra water proofing. I got a Tag Manager as well and connected it to HomeKit via Home Assistant. Now I have a temperature sensor in my Home app and I can ask Siri what the pool temperature is. Good stuff.

Welcome to TFP.

Thanks for the tip. There are lots of IOT devices coming to the market to monitor pools. The skimmer can become a crowded box.

Let us know how it holds up after a season or two.

Oh this is cool! :goodjob:

I was thinking of cutting a small bore hole into my skimmer and inserting as flat a long stemmed dial thermometer as possible in the hole. My autocover runs over my skimmer so I need to be cautious of "drag".

Cost of your new toys? Parts??

I have a skimmer cover with a thermometer insert. It is handy for walking by the pool and glancing at the temperature.

What is a tag manager? What is a tag, in fact?

I've seen those manual covers, Allen but look at the cost?! I was gonna go cheap on one made myself....but this new toy thingie costs about the same as those manual thermometer covers so getting new age is obviously a better move.

Just giving you options to spend your money. I bought my skimmer cover with thermometer over 10 years ago. There are new gadgets for the pool every year. No batteries to die in the thermometer.

Internet Of Thing (IOT) devices run on batteries and don’t have the power to do WiFi. So they communicate using low power radios to a Tag Manager that connects to your network. A Tag Manager can talk to 40 low power devices around your house.

I love having everything in one place, namely HomeKit and home assistant.
The Tag Manager is basically a hub for these devices. There have several different kinds so I viewed it as an investment. I’m getting one of their temp and humidity air sensors for my backyard for $25.
The website product page states a 5 year battery life with the default 10 min logging interval. The device holds onto 13 logs before transmitting to save battery, but this can be turned off. I changed mine to logging every 1 hr and sending that info every time. Should last me around 4-5 years. It takes a 1/2 size AA battery.

I just got HomeAssistant up and running on a docker last night! Windows10 pc host. Very cool!
Uploaded Git files for ewelink and smartlife integration. Portainer set up to manage the docker.

Really cool to see the dash with everything integrated and the temps of my sensors with graphs etc.

Now the fun begins with scripting.
