I just got my FAS-DPD kit yesterday :-D Had to order it took a week, got "the pool guy" deal from a cool employee $43.00 I have some green alge growing on rough edges and under a few blisters (pool needs to be replastered) I'm super clorinating it up to at least 30ppm and am testing twice a day so I'm in the same boat as you, I'm using alot of drops from the R-0871 Here is what I found tonight
Leslies:
http://www.lesliespool.com/browse/Home/ ... 30/I/81348
FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent, .75 oz. $8.49
FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent, 2 oz. $12.89

Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-FAS-DPD-Ti ... 689&sr=8-2
Taylor FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent (Chlorine) .75 oz R-0871-A $8.35
Taylor FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent (Chlorine) 2 oz R-0871-C $10.49

I'll see if they will give me a deal on a reagent, usually I have to buy enough of somthing to make it look like a pool guy purchase (whole bucket of shock, 7 boxes of 2 gallon clorine jugs)ect..
So when doing the Chlorine test for the SLAM do I need to purchase an entire TAYLOR test kit or only the FAS/DPD reagents? I've spent hundreds of dollars already on chemicals trying to get rid of mustard algae. So I need the bare min to purchase for the FC testing daily. My CYA is at a 52 according to pool store. So what exactly is needed only to test the Chlorine multiple times a day.

Welcome to TFP!

You cannot rely on any pool store testing to perform the SLAM Process, so you need a full test kit.

As you said, you've spent hundreds on chemicals and haven't gotten results. I'd consider that a good reminder of just how trustworthy the pool store is and why having the tools necessary to disconnect from them is the best investment you can make for your pool.

R-0870 Powder, R-003 and R-0871 Reagent are sold separately. You may find that the entire K-1515 kit is sold for less, however.

With that said, you need an entire test kit, not just FAS-DPD to follow TFP methods.
Test Kits Compared

Dealing with algae would not normally cost hundreds of dollars if you avoid the pool store potions, but instead focus on self-testing and following the SLAM Process.

The pool stores get the CYA test wrong the most out of all of them. You can get the FAS-DPD test separate and I’d guess you can find a CYA test kit as well. Might not be much cheaper than a whole kit though.

Don't spend your money on chemicals and magic potions. Put your money into a quality test kit. It's by far the best investment you'll make for your pool. It will save you much money, time, effort, and frustration while delivering superior outcomes.

Don't get so hung up on the sticker shock of the reliable test kit. 50% or more of it is stocking you up on the parts you'll need (depending on the kit). Once you have all the vials and doo-dads, the reagent refills go on sale each spring in the $40s.

Years 2+ are laughable at how little you'll spend to stay the heck out the pool store. My 'free tests', usually weekly, were rarely less than $100, and often well above $100. There wasn't nothing 'free' about it.
