Tavertine over existing deck and change coping type

Hi fellow TFP experts,

i have 18x36 rectangular pool with center steps. the pool deck is old , it hasbt been opened in years and now i am planning to open it next year. also, plan to do most work myself.

i want to do 2 main things:

1. Change Coping. i current have the coping which is very old, looks like the image below (Yes, it has the blue line). i was wondering if i could change it for something more modern without tooo much work.

2. Change the deck. currently its plain old concrete which is flaked/damaged (but not cracked) in various places.

I am thinking 2 solutions:
A> Change to Tavertine for floor and coping, but i am wondering if it can be installed on top of the existing concrete. i am dreaming a sheetfall on the deep end if possible (Maybe in future). also dreaming a diy automatic pool cover (lol... i dream a lot).

B> Keep it simple just remove the existing coping and replace with a new kind of some sorts and refinish the plaster.

really want to do A, but want to know if anyone has done it and/or cannot be done, stop dreaming :).

Thanks,
Sam

Sam, My wife and I did this (particularly the travertine coping and travertine decking)...It was a LOT of work. We don’t have to worry about freezing here in Arizona so I do not know how that would impact your travertine dream.

I have detailed the the effort it took and DIY costs in my “build thread” shown in my signature below. Check it out...I dreamed for years before actually doing it.

That coping looks like it has the vinyl bead retainer built in. Does it? If so, do you have a plan to incorporate a bead retainer under the travertine?

I'll check and post pics tomorrow. if it is, then would it become a deal with the new liner ? i mean would i need to install one or the liner replacement people would be able to install it later ?
