Taping XPS foam - what exactly does three layers mean?

So I’m going to be installing my new intex 32x16x52 pool soon and I’m thinking I’m going to go with 1” or 1/2” XPS foam under the liner. I have just spent a lot of time searching the forums to see how people recommend installing the foam and I keep seeing people talking about using three layers of tape. Maybe I’m just being dense, but I’m not quite sure what is meant by three layers of tape.

My inclination would be to stagger them, like this:

But three layers of tape could also mean three layers of tape placed directly on top of each other.

Can anyone clarify exactly how the tape should be attached to the foam?

Your above picture nails just what they mean. The reason is the first layer keeps the pieces together then the other two make sure the liner with the water on it cannot force the pieces apart. It really ends up being 2 layers of tape where the left/right pieces sit on top of the middle piece if you look at it that way.
