I’m taking over maintenance of my in-laws’ indoor pool. Built in the 1970’s. About 30k gallons. Never been emptied.
Initial taylor test kit results:
FC 0; pH 8.2; TA 110; CH 150; CYA 0.
They added chlorine tabs to skimmer about 3 wks ago.
Using pool math app to get amounts of chem needed.
Planning to add 45oz of 31.45% muriatic acid to lower pH, then add 10lbs of dry CYA, then SLAM with 488oz of 7.55% bleach.

Does this sound ok? how long should I wait between adding each chem? Any tips or pearls for maintaining indoor pools?
Equipment pad looks chaotic. I removed the power strip.

I wait at least 30 minutes between muriatic acid and bleach with pump on and brush after I pour. Never want to mix those two as it produces a toxic gas.

You don't need so much CYA for an indoor pool. TFP recommendation is 20-30, not 40+, so maybe only 5 pounds dry stabilizer.

If you do 5 pounds instead of 10, the CYA won't lower pH as much, so you'll need to use more MA. Keep in mind that the pH test is most accurate between 7 and 8, so "8.2" should probably be read as "at least 8.2", and you might need to lower pH by more than 1.0 to get it to 7.2.

I'd probably do CYA first, using the sock method, because that will probably lower pH into the accurate range. Then I'd measure pH and add enough MA to get it down to 7.0-7.2, then wait an hour or two for the MA to mix before testing once more to confirm CYA and pH.

For the SLAM, you'll want to maintain FC at 40% of whatever CYA level you end up with.

I removed the power strip.

Yikes.

So, 2 days ago I added 5# of CYA and brought CYA level to 30 and pH down to 7.5.
I then added 58oz of 31.45% MA, which brought pH down to 7.2 overnight.
24 hrs ago I added 486 fl oz of 7.55% bleach. 10 hours later, FC was 12.5 and CC was 1. The room smelled like Chloramines, but not overpowering.
This AM, FC was 12 and CC was 0.5.

Water now looks light green, but isn’t cloudy. Chloramine smell remains.
I noticed that the sand filter pressure gauge always reads zero. Is this normal? I’m keeping the pool pump running continuously.

Thank you for all the advice. Everything seems to be going to plan so far.
I’ll test FC/CC daily for now.
