Every year when I open the pool the TA is at 40. I raise it to 50 with baking soda because recommendation here is min TA of 50. But, then once the TA is 50, the pH starts to inch up. Is there really a reason to have the TA at least 50 or is 40 ok since my pH seems more stable there?

Right now, TA = 50, pH = 7.8.

If your pH is stable at 40 TA, leave it. But beware it can crash quite easily if you add any product that is acidic.
