It moves pretty slow, just don't want to pull the cord too hard..Mine stays in the pool all the time but i I am swimming I take it out mainly to keep the kids from doing something silly like using the cord for tug-a-war
I only have it in when it's working. Given that, I don't like to swim while it's working/in because I would be stirring up the dust and it would be less effective.
I leave it in pretty much when no one is swimming, but do not swim with it in, just in case it shorts out, although I would think Maytronics has a fail-safe for that whih may be the GFI outlet. Also I am sure my kids would be trying to ride it, so the rule is no one goes in until robot is out.
