SWG seems to be working harder with less output

Nope. Leave the pH alone. pH test does not work with FC >= 10. Let's just focus on FC!
Okie dokie! Got it. Looking forward to getting back to normal and NEVER having this happen again. I’m raising my CyA to 80 and my FC to 9-10 once I’m done.

Baby steps. You said your screen enclosure is UV protected. So start with 70 CYA and see how you like it. My primary point is whatever CYA level you choose run FC hot. Try 70 with FC of 9. See how it holds.

I’ve had it at 70 and thought it was working well. Apparently not 🤣 ok will leave it at 70 and try 9 and see how my pool likes it. Thanks for the help.

I keep the filter running when doing the overnight test right?

Also can I turn the filter down now? It been running on high for 3 days 24/7. Filter has been cleaned each day - just did it again and it hardly needed hosing at all. Water is crystal clear. Just wondering if I can start running it at a lower speed. I put the last lot of chlorine in 1.5 hours ago - I’m not putting any more in now. Unless the overnight test fails of course. I just don’t see how it could fail. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I run it 24/7 anyway - just will be nice to get it off high.

You can turn it off high.

Also I would not rush to do an OCLT tonight. Keep it SLAM level now and before you go to bed. Let the FC drift down into the teens tomorrow and run your OCLT then.

Sounds like a plan. I’ll put my last chlorine in now then. And I can’t wait to turn down the filter! Will do the overnight test in a couple of days. Gosh I hope it passes…

So mu FC hasn’t budged since my last chlorine add at 1pm. Still sitting at 29. Which I think is good news. I will let it start to come down now. Will let you guys know once I do the overnight test in a couple of days. I’ve used 7 gallons of chlorine and cleaned the filter 3 times. I’ve used all of a new bottle of dpd reagent, but got some more delivered today. Silver lining is now I know how to slam a pool! Thanks you guys for all the help and support. I hope the pool gives me the all clear to return back to normal in a couple of days time.

So I know I was supposed to wait for a few days for the overnight test but I couldn’t help myself. It passed. Lost .5 overnight. I will do it again in a couple of days regardless, just to confirm, as you say it will be easier with lower numbers. Happy days! Thank you again for all the help. Today we swim!!!

but in all fairness, as an amateur, I tan my FC according to the TFP CYA table. 70 CYA = 5 FC

The FC / CYA tables (especially for SWG) are pretty low. It's easy to see a daily swing of 1.5 or more PPM FC with a SWG. Consider this: if chlorine is essentially 1.) free, 2.) automatic, 3.) safe to swim up to SLAM levels, and 4.) Only affects pH drop test above 10ppm, then:

Why not consider running your CYA / SWG at levels that keep your pool FC around 8, instead of 5? There's literally no downside.

Today my FC is 17 - well at 10am it was 17. Just been in the water - we have been swimming for a couple of days. Slight smell of chlorine, but otherwise the water is great. Assuming the residual smell is normal tho. However, today my eyes are stinging. Assuming high Ph. Can I test and treat yet? Or do I have to leave it until it gets below 10?

We went from 16.5 to 16 overnight. I would have been happier with 0 but I think this is still ok according to the instructions? It only lost 1 from 10am yesterday to 8.30 last night. So I was surprised it even lost .5 overnight. 0 CC. I emptied a couple of inches of water yesterday as well - too much rain. Am I ok to just continue to let it drop now and then get the water balanced again? Do I need to be concerned about the .5 drop? Have set myself a weekly reminder to clean the filter so hopefully this will be avoided in the future - all my testing in the world can’t out do a dirty filter! And yes - I will be keeping my FC hot from here on out regardless. 🤦🏻‍♀️
