I just saw something after some Googling that said that plaster pools with SWG need to be resurfaced much sooner than pools chlorinated in other ways. The claim is that the SWG is very hard on the plaster surface. Is this true or just someone spreading FUD?

FUD. I haven't heard of any problems with plaster. Most of the reported problems are from comparatively soft natural stone near but not in the pool, and even with stone work most people don't have problems.
SWG by itself doesn't cause any damage to anything. Salt might. But usually damage attributed to SWG's is caused by improper water balance.
