Does it prolong the life of the cell to swap it out for a dummy cell over the winter? I know that it only generates above a certain temp so I was curious if it would wear out at all over winter when it wasn't active. Thanks.

Only if you are concerned with freezing. And if you properly drain everything, it will be fine.
