Swamp Opening (Helping the In-Laws)

My latest pics. The main drain is finally visible - albeit a very fuzzy view. Patterned liner is starting to be visible in the shallow end and on the hopper sides of the deep end.

Latest update. The water looked crystal clear until I brushed. Then clouds of crud came up.

Getting close.

Remove that ladder and scrub inside the tubes with a brush, and 10:1 water:chlorine to kill algae in those tubes.

As I’ve said before, that ladder isn’t able to be removed. I’ve had professionals try for hours on multiple occasions. It’s stuck despite all efforts. The pool has been in use many years with this same issue. It will clear up to be Crystal clear eventually. That approach likely would speed it up but it’s not an option open to me.

Passed OCLT - now letting the FC drop a bit and tune in pump run time vs swg output. Need to fine tune ph and ta and raise cya higher. It should be about 45-50 at this point. I want it around 75-80 I think.
Aim for 70- you may need to go to eventually 80 in the dog days of summer. Easier to do smaller increments anyway

Frequent backwashing and minor leaks mean levels drift down - I’m always nervous starting low. Maybe 75?
How often are you backwashing? I only backwash when pressure rises 25% over clean pressure which is maybe a handful of times during my 7 month season. I have moderate debris that gets in my pool. My pool is twice the size of yours & the filter is just 50# larger. Sand actually filters better when it’s a little bit dirty.

I backwash at 20% but I can try 25% this year. In truth it isn’t super frequent except during slam. What’s more impactful is the fact I think I may have a small leak but I’m not sure yet. I’ll watch things as the season progresses.

As far as how often? At the moment it’s been frequent (just finished SLAM). But I’d have to dig into logs from last year. My father in law used to try to help and his memory is shot… so last years results might be distorting my expectations. He may have backwashed more frequently than I had desired. Also last year my Sand filter was about half as full as it should be. I hadn’t opened it since we bought the place and it worked but the sand wasn’t at the correct level. I added 100lbs this year and only a small amount was lost at the beginning in backwash activity suggesting the levels are now right. The filter pressure last year was only about 13. Now it’s about 15. My tolerance for pressure rise before was around 16-17. I haven’t mentally adjusted to the new base pressure and have backwashed at 17.5-18 except at the very start when pressures as high as 25 might happen before I got back to the pool.
