Suggestion for our concrete!

Hello everyone! I found this site which I'm hoping is good timing because we just signed our pool build contract (pool size 18'X36"). One of my first questions is what is everyone's opinion on concrete? We have the option of regular brushed concrete ($7.50) colored concrete ($8.50) textured/colored concrete ($10.50) or stamped/colored concrete ($11.50). We are doing approximately 900 sq. ft. of concrete with the surround and the patio (15'x25') of which 409 ft. is included with the pool at the brushed level. Is there anyone who has input on this for us or maybe pictures of their pool they can share? Doing the stamped is what I think looks great but it also doubles the cost of the concrete by the time we pay for the addition on the 409 ft. Currently we have a red textured patio off our walk out door which I don't like, so we don't want to try to duplicate this and honestly I would prefer if it was just regular concrete over what is currently there. We are already nearing the top of our budget but its also such a permeant investment that I'd rather love what we get then after wish we had done something different. I just don't know if we really would notice the difference.

We got "stone-marked" which was $1/sq foot above the regular brushed. We love the look.

More pictures including doing the actual marking in my sigline pics.

We personally went with plain stamped concrete for a pool that we recently had finished last month, so that it would blend in with some existing stamped concrete that we had put down a couple of years ago.

For us, it was $7/sq foot for additional stamped concrete above the 500 sq feet that was included in the price of the pool build.

Hi,
I'll throw in my .02.

Stained concrete will have to be re-stained periodically. Can be expensive and difficult to determine exaclty how it's gonna turn out
Stamped concrete can be nice, but needs a very skilled person to do it right. It's usually pricey, and with an Unskilled installer can look fake and unappealing. High Risk.
Regular brushed concrete is well... boring. I hate to put it that way, but it is.

Why don't you consider exposed aggregate? It's permanent, on par and usually less in price than stained or stamped, its more slip resistant that all the others and its gorgeous.

I have it, and I love it.

I like the look of exposed aggregate, but it looks like it could be uncomfortable on bare feet. Or does that just depend on how it's done - how much the aggregate protrudes from the concrete?

T,

I suspect it depends on how it is done... I have a rent house pool that has exposed aggregate and it not only hurts your feet to walk on it, it will burn the bottom of your feet right off in the summer.

I have stamped concrete at my house and while 'ok'... if I had to do it all over again, I think I would pay more and get some type of stone decking..

Thanks for posting,

We have exposed aggregate and love it. The looks are great, supposed to last the longest without needing any maintenance and stay looking like new. I have been on aggregate before at a friends house that hurt my feet, I think it's all in how it's done. They do an acid wash after they put the aggregate down to expose the stones, if they wash away too much of the concrete, you get the stones too "exposed" which hurts your feet. Ours doesn't hurt your feet at all and doesn't get too hot to walk on with bare feet. Our neighbors got a pool a few months after us and changed from stamped to aggregate after they saw how nice ours came out. Would definitely not change if I had to do it over again.
