Sudden Low Flow error but decent (low?) pressure...

Had a pool party yesterday and the pool was looking a bit cloudy by the end of the night. I added half a gallon of bleach and put my intellichlor ic40 on SuperChlorinate mode just to wipe out the waste overnight (I don't think single kid took a bathroom break all day. Hmmm...). This morning I woke to a low-flow light on the chlorinator. Pump was running at 1800rpm, which is my usual speed when not running the pool cleaner. Pool water was clear, btw, and FC was 9.5 with 0 CC. Woo hoo! Letting the FC drift back down over the next day or two.

Anyway, I've been having very low suction and return pressure all day. I cleaned out the baskets and checked the pump impaler (removed the pump basket and put my fingers in the pipe to feel if anything was in there - nothing was there), no fix. When I restart the system the pump primes fine but when it revs back down to 1800 the pool cleaner runs way slower than usual, even at 1800rpm, the spa spillway has less "umph" and the return jets are anemic. The low flow error goes away...for a while, but eventually comes back on. I imagine that's related to how often the SWG samples flow rate?

Pressure on my 100sqft Pentair Quad DE filter is 10psi. When priming it shoots up to 30psi. The pool was just built and filled in April, but a friend told me that the filter should be cleaned shortly after running it for a month or two. Could this be the issue even though the pressure doesn't seem excessive? I was waiting until the pressure was continuously 25% above Clean. It's a large filter for a relatively small 10k gallon pool.

Other than that, any suggestions for how to diagnose the issue? I get very little debris in the pool - 1-2 flower petals right now because of a nearby bloom, but no trees or anything but I suppose something could get into the lines? New to this so any suggestions appreciated.

TIA,

Fred

BTW, I saw in Pool School to try "backlflushing" the suction side by inserting a hose with a rag (or get a Drain King device) into the pump basket inlet. Presumably this would flush back to the skimmer, but would anything "big" be able to escape? Depending on suggestions here, I'll try that next, but looking for help understanding possibilities to explore.

Fred,

What you have described is a classic dirty filter problem. On new pools it is always a good idea to open and clean the filter after 30 or 45 days just to clean out the construction "junk that can get in there.

I would clean the filter and also run an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test (OCLT), just to make sure nothing is brewing... Here is how... Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks, Jim. I will clean it out (now I have to decide whether to use regular DE or something like AquaPerl...) and hopefully that resolves the issue. :)

Can you expand on why? I haven't found anything negative about the alternatives (esp AquaPerl) other than one individual with a Hayward filter was told to avoid cellulose. Admittedly, there isn't a lot out there (perhaps it's a sign that they are generally trouble free?). Thanks.

Over the years these DE replacements have come and gone. They dont filter as well as DE and dont backwash as well. I have yet to see a DE substitute that works as well as the original.
