Suction side vacuum to drain pool

Can I use my suction side vacuum to drain my pool. I have a cartridge filter and I can connect a hose to the pressure relief valve to a sewage drain in the backyard. Has anyone tried this? Can I do it to replace 20% of water every day for a few days in order to lower my CYA?

Seems like it would be real slow draining through the cartridge filter air relief valve. The weather has been perfect for a quick drain and refill. Have you considered just buying or renting a submersible pump? Doing a series of 20% drains is not the most efficient way to replace water.

That aside, your plan should work assuming the vacuum hose and the port to which it is connected remain submerged. Pool vacuum hoses are generally not airtight. You should also consider adding a hose bib to your pool plumbing. This will allow you to drain water without using the filters valve.

Thank you for your input neighbor. I am an totally newbie and got scared about draining the pool completely from some of the posts here. I can order the pump and have the pool drained and refilled quickly (have one of those sprinkler valves which add fresh water quickly) but just have been afraid to do it. Have a call scheduled on Friday with city engineer for the rules of draining the pool.
