Started up my new pool and my spa spillover is leaking out the sides

I just filled my new pool and I am getting confused about pool mode vs spillover mode. In my pool mode there is no return to the spa. Skimmers drains and returns are open in the pool and drains and returns closed in the spa. The only way to circulate the spa with the pool is spillover where it drains from the pool and then returns to the spa (skimmers and returns closed in the pool). Is this a normal set up? Also I just added chlorine to my pool for the first time to get the ppm to 3 (in pool mode). When should I then circulate this to the spa? I just added 3 gallons of chlorine to the pool (33k gallon pool).

I run my spillover for 20 minutes twice a day at 9AM and 2PM to refresh my spa water. That is sufficient to keep the spa as fresh as the pool.

If you shock the pool then do you just wait till the 9a? I am starting up my pool and just added the chlorine in pool mode so trying to figure out when to do spillover so get the chlorinated water into the spa. Also do you have any way to run both the pool and the spa to circulate or is it only done with spillover?

I have never shocked my pool in 20 years.

I run my pump and SWG 24/7.

The spa can wait to get any adjusted water at the next scheduled spillover run time,

You can always run the spillover manually for 15 minutes or so.

Running spillover is circulating the water through the pool and spa.

How do you know how long it takes to turn the spa over? So how do you know 15 minutes is long enough?
Typical spa is 500 gallons. Typical flow rate is 50 GPM.

Crunch the numbers.

Adjust the spillover time for whatever makes you comfortable.

Looking for a recommendation on a product to seal the ends of the side channels of my spillover. It’s bluestone and when they thermal edged the top of the side channel pieces they bowed up at the end. So now that when I run the spillover- water is leaking under the small gap between the base stone and the end of the bottom of the side channel stone-dripping back to the wall. I was thinking maybe use a caulk to seal it, but most silicone caulk say not to use in submerged water. I found custom building products make a silicone caulk that matches their grout and says you can use it in pools- so maybe that would work? I could find a color to match the stone. Or I could use a clear product, I’m looking for something that will look good, seal it, and not be affected by the chemicals/water. Any recommendations?

How do I determine the pump gpm with a variable speed pump in spill mode?
It might help the discussion to say what model pump you have?

Some pumps can display flow rates.

Or you can put in a flow meter.

Or you can trust me.

Any sealing around stone on a spillover should use grout.

I cannot see on your pictures what your words try to describe.

There are two side pieces of bluestone that form the spillway and keep the water from going over the right or left side. At the end these are not flush and there is like a 1/16 in gap allowing water to spill out on the right and left side. If you look at the one pic with the water flowing you can see on the side the water is coming out. I was avoiding grout as I wanted it to be less noticeable and also not wash out with the constant flow.

Please highlight on the picture what you are describing.

Grout will not wash out if properly applied and allowed to cure.
