Hi all,

My Pentair VSP is 6 years old and recently started making a squeaky sound, see video. I’ve done zero maintenance on the pump since I got it. It works flawlessly.

I’m assuming some part needs lubricating, but I’m unsure. Does anyone have a guess as to what the problem could be and a potential fix (assuming anything needs to be done)?

Thanks y’all

Better if you post the video to Youtube and mark it public. Then paste a link here.

Normally is the fan shroud on the back of the motor.

Maybe the pump shaft seal or the motor shaft seal.

Done, changed link to YouTube. If it is the fan shroud what do I do? Is this high/low priority? Any other possibilities as to what it could be?

Check what JamesW posted -- though it sounds like it is a constant sound not just at start or stop.

Fan shroud has screws. See if one or some are loose.

Not urgent if fan shroud, if seals as posted by JamesW, I would get that worked on.

There is a flat rubber washer called a water slinger and behind the flat rubber washer is a motor shaft seal that looks like the below rubber seal.

Replace the pump shaft seal, the motor shaft seal and the water slinger.

You can remove the slinger and motor shaft seal as they are not critical, but you risk motor damage from dirt, debris and water possibly getting into the motor and bearings.

There is a gap at the bottom of the motor where you could use spray silicone to try to lubricate the Motor Shaft Seal.

Maybe get a tube that can slip under the flat washer (Water Slinger) to direct the silicone to the rubber seal.

Thank you all!

I’ll keep this thread handy and report back once I’ve attempted a fix (I think I’ll wait for my father in law, a former “fine” mechanic, to visit for Christmas before I attempt this).

In the second video he probably destroyed the bearing to some degree just by his lousy tools. The black part he's using is putting brute force on the bearings outer race and why would you use a sledge hammer that you can't feel the progress.
Note that the videos were just to show where the rubber motor shaft seal is.

At this point, there is no reason to replace the bearings or disassemble the motor.
