Hey all. I’m not open yet which is late for me. I usually open when water is in 30’s but winter hs been rough in pa this year and we have a small repair to do and want cover still on since steps are exposed cause water is down still. Don’t want sun on them.

My water is 47-51. Can I have an algae problem possibly. I added chlorine on third of April. Took it up to 9 ish. I say that cause my chlorine is from last year. I measured after pool water mixed with my pump on bottom of pool for 3 hours. We got 3 inches of rain yesterday. My fc right now is 3.5. I’m going to add more now. Mix it for a few hours.

Questions. 1. Algae possibility at this water temp with cover on?
2. Can I use this old chlorine I know it isn’t as strong so I got to over dose but does older chlorine burn off quicker?

3. I’m picking up new chlorine today not just wondering in mean time if I can’t get it in today or tomorrow. We got to go out of town tonight into tomorrow. I’ll add it Sunday.

4. Plan on opening by end of next week when we are all fixed up. First winter with small issue. More on that later. 3 days in 70’s next week.

5. I don’t want algae!!! I went 4 winters and 4 seasons without it yet!

1 - Yes. It just grows slower.
2 - Yes. It's just weaker.
3 - You can be in the water when you know for sure the FC is not above the SLAM level based on your current CYA. But without having the main pump on for good water circulation, you can't get a good teat reading. You can add some chlorine, brush, sweep, and scoop for now, but I wouldn't try to do too much until the system is running.

You should be good to go.. You can use the old chlorine it just wont be as strong.. Take it to SLAM level if you are worried but normally even with 0 FC and the temp below 60 degrees your good..

Yes to algae growth. I had some bright green algae growing on my skimmer box even though the pool water temp was 50*. I also have old LC I plan to use first but you'll just have to use more as it's degraded.

Thanks no I don’t e spect much now justcto try and keep some chlorine on there. I’m assuming if anything is going on it’s minor cause on the 4th my reading was 6 and today it’s 3.5. Yes I know notcthe most accurate but it’s not zero. I’m just going to keep the level up as much as I can till I get running. The pump on the floor works well if I dose over the winters and take a reading at one end of the pool and then the other after 3 hrs of mixing they match so it deff mixes it somewhat.

Ok I added double what I should have cause I know it’s deff not as strong. It’s from early last season! Lol

So I’m not ever really testing right now cause I’m still closed but I did a reading 2 days ago 10. Yesterday 8. Today 7.5. I’m bringing back up close to slam based on 30 cya cause every spring that’s pretty much what it is. Again I’m just trying to keep chlorine in it till we open on Thursday after I’m fixed. I’m not worried. I just added another gallon of my weaker stuff to raise it a bit. I’m going to detail my wife’s truck while chlorine mixes with my pump on bottom with the hose whip I made. Il measure at opposite end of pool but I think I’m totally in good shape. I think. Lol. All I know is if we don’t get fishing soon I’m going to loose my mind. Those that know me on here know I love to be on the boats fishing in summer and I got a new bass boat that has been out once only. Horrible spring. Horrible!
