Spillover zone around frame pool base

I am establishing my 1ft step back into our slope cut for our above ground frame pool. That makes a space of 1ft between the edge of the cut and the wall of the pool. The legs will sit on 4x8x2 Blocks set flush with the base. Our dirt is about 30% rock, from pea size up to 6". (Fun digging.) There will be pool water splashover and rain, that will fall into that 1ft step back area that will want to go under the pool. What do i use in that zone, to prevent erosion and undercutting of the sand and dirt that is under the base of the pool.

What I did was dug down about 3" and filled that in with pea gravel. I then put a stepping stone under the skimmer AND return (for a total of 2). Here is the important part......make sure it is slanted away from the pool. It only has to be a slight slant but enough so when the water overflows the skimmer it will go away from the pool. Make sure the stepping stone does NOT touch the pool wall. Right at it but not touching. This has served me well in keeping from washing out from under the pool.

Without a picture or sketch of your layout it is hard to advise you. I'm thinking your slope above the cut out area could direct water towards your pool as well and if this is the case you may want to bury some corrugated drainage pipe under the 1 foot space next to the pool and cover it with crushed stone.

Good luck,

Mike.
