The advice here seems to be very good. I have put most of it into practice for the first time this year, with excellent results, thank you! I have owned this old pool for a little over a year.

Now I have a problem with my ancient pump. It has been humming before kicking in, and today it hummed and then quit. I reset breakers and tried again, it hummed and kicked on in about 10 seconds, ran for about 15 minutes pushing the water well, but then quit again. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Also, if I have to wait a week for someone to fix it, how should I handle the water chemistry?

There are better folks on the forum to advise you on the pump motor issue. Might be as simple as the start capacitor, but will let them chime in.

To maintain the pool, add your chlorine as needed from your testing and brush, swim, run a robot, etc to mix the water. You can even put a sump pump in the pool and jet the water out to mix it. If you have one, or can get one.

Take care.

Great idea with robot and sump pump! Is the capacitor inside the pump (duh!) would this be a mechanical or an electrical issue, easily repaired? I just changed my user name to Hidden River to prevent mix ups with administrator swamp woman.

The capacitor on most electric motors is under a little cap on top or the side of the motor. But others can help you better. PM BamaRambler.

Good luck.

If you have an electric motor rebuild company in your town they might have one. Or online, do a search. Again, not sure that is it, but tends to be talked about alot on this forum.
