Soon to be new pool owner - Basic Questions

We were all where you are now.....aks any and all questions you want to. We LOVE to help new people. Better to ask up front than to make a mistake that will take a lot more effort to fix.

Please take a pic of the water looking down at the steps so we can see what you are dealing with at this point. Oh and can you tell me the model number of you filter so we can figure it out more.

Thank you both for the replies. I will need to find a way to safely remove the ion system. In terms of the cya I think this most recent test was the most accurate.

All equipment seems to be pentair.

Pump is part number 177475-20 and is 1 1/2 hp.

The filter is a ta 60d

The valve is 272562

I took some of the stairs and of the cleaner on the deep side of the pool.

The water on the deep end is so cloudy the zodiac g3 is almost invisible.

Update pics added.

Thanks again,

You can take the wire off the ion device or disconnect it from power for now. Eventually find a way to back out the copper bar holder and put a plug in it.

Thanks I think I can also remove the copper and then disconnect the power from the panel that controls the ion system.

For now I just removed the other photos I added since they did not seem very important and put up the water pics.

Still cloudy. I will post again later. I also powered off the copper ion device.

We had a ton of rain last night and resulting debris. I did not brush yet today but did clean the skimmer and use the net.

I am a bit shocked (pun intended) my fc did not drop at all.

Great. Must not have been all that much rain.

SLAM Process outlines three criteria. You passed the OCLT last night. Once you have clear water, then do another OCLT and be sure to test CC in the morning.

Thanks I will keep an eye on things and try to keep it clean.

I found a Dolphin g3 cleaner that looks barely used in parts. I put it back together and I think I have everything needed to connect to the skimmer but I am not sure what setting to use on the valve.

Should I leave it on filter or move it to the waste setting? There is still so much debris around the drain and in some parts of the pool I really want to run the vacuum now that it seems I have all of the parts. I did find the manual online but saw that running on waste seems to also to drain water. I have a leaf canister coming today.

Thanks again

Waste setting on your multi valve will drain water. The use of a suction side cleaner is done with multi valve on filter.

If the debris is large you should be able to net it out. If dirt, your cleaner should pick it up.

Thank you for the confirmation.

The debris is pretty small and flies around when I try to get it with the net.

One last thing, the manual for the g3 said to close the main drain. Is it safe to assume the drain is closed since the pool is not draining water?

Thanks again.

John

The main drain is not for 'draining' the water. It is plumbed either to the pad or to one of the skimmers and is an alternative suction point. Do you have a marked line at the pad that says main drain? Or does our skimmer have two ports under the basket with a device to deflect suction from either the skimmer or main drain?

The one skimmer on the pool only has one port.

I have not seen any line marked as main drain.

There two lines that have valves that are in the open position that appear to be the lines to and from the pool.

If there are two lines from the pool to the suction side of the pump and only one skimmer, then one of the lines is for the main drain.

Slowly shut off one of the valves and see what happens. Do not starve the pump.

Ok here is a picture of the lines with letters and I think I figured them out.

A is for waste, b is for the ion, c is to the pump, d far left front seems to be the one I would turn off, e seems to be the line from the pool.

Sorry for the light text. I edited on my phone.

D and E are both from the pool, called suction. One is the main drain and one is the skimmer.

Thanks again.

I had to leave the house for a bit but will be heading back over shortly with a new load of things to move in.

So when I start closing D if it seems to starve the pump of water should I reopen and try E on the other side?

I am trying to think through what the main drain actually does. Since there is only one skimmer where is it pulling water from on the pool side?

The skimmer is the inlet from the pool for the suction side. You can use some main drain if you want, but more suction from the skimmer is best as that is what skims floating debris from the pool.

If the one valve starts to starve the pump, try the other one. Your skimmer should be able to full supply the water needed to run the pump.
