Calcium is the gift that keeps on giving

If you run pH and TA at the low end of the scale so that the CSI is negative, and you brush it frequently with a steel brush, you can dissolve some of it back into solution. Think glacial pace. Months if not years. If it's really bad, people will get road rash just brushing against it. It can get like 60 grit sandpaper. If it's mild, it actually improves traction.

Hmmmmm, I'll have to do some feeling around. I don't think with an above ground pool a steel brush is a good idea so I'd be stuck with it.

If it's a vinyl pool, it should dissolve pretty easily. It may also be metal stains. Did you ever use any copper algaecide, or any miracle pool product with "blue" in its name, or a pool frog system? If things don't lighten in a few days, try rubbing a vitamin C tablet on the worst of it. If it fades, it's metals.
