I think its 1-3 hours at the mustard level. I'm so aggravated w/ my pool I've left most of my stuff in there since I started slamming. Opened the pool in Mid-May, SLAMed it for a week, let the chlorine drift and swam in it a few times. Now its a holiday weekend and I'm out of the pool again going on a week.

Zapafan: Didnt use the sock, just added slowly to the skimmer as instructed on the back of the bottle. But will do the sock next time.

S1njin: Why dont you use the pool while SLAMing? Does the mustard algae ever go away?

I live in Illinois and the pollen this year has been horrible along with the cotton wood. I have used skimmer socks basically all year trying to keep it under control. Thank goodness no one in my household has allergies, because they'd be miserable.

Does pollen stain the pool and look like algae?

Also, if I may ask...is there any risk of damaging pool equipment keeping the pool at and above yellow algae shock level for weeks at a time?

Mustard algae is supposed to go away after 24 hours of Mustard Shock (following a successful SLAM) and assuming you threw all the 'infected' gear in the pool to begin with. Which to me seems like a losing battle as I'm sure there will be something I neglect to throw in.

I'm going to end up dosing w/ Polyquat 60 after all of this is done as a 2nd line of defense in the hopes I don't have to go through this ordeal a third time this year.

As to swimming you can get in if the chlorine is 1ppm under the normal shock level for your level of CYA. Mine has been running over that, if only b/c I can only test in the morning and evening and I don't want to fall under shock level during the afternoon and thus making this ordeal longer than it needs to be.

I have only had to deal with algae one time when opening. I personally don't have that information or experience with mustard algae other than what I have read, but if you PM a moderator they can definitely help you. There are a lot of people on this forum that have dealt with it.
 
If the FC is below the shock level required based on CYA - can you go swimming in it? I'm SLAMMING my pool but I keep losing 2ppm chlorine every night for the past two nights. Otherwise you'd never know I even have a problem.

4th of July weekend and my kids are locked out of the pool. :( So CYA 65 shock is supposed to be 26. They can swim at 25?

I'm assuming by using the pool while I'm trying to SLAM it will probably make the SLAM a little longer since I'm introducing people into the mix. People = things my chlorine needs to kill. Chlorine actively killing people 'funk' can be misconstrued as algae/organic funk (failing the OCLT)?
 
You are correct. It will slow it down a little BUT in my eyes (and your kid's eyes) it would be OH so worth it!

BUT how is your water LOOKING? Since we started on the other thread I forgot to ask that before I told the kids they could go swimming.

Okay let do this game with the kids. Get one of the old toothbrushes and have them brush the pool's small parts-all around the returns and the around the skimmer boxes. Do you have a light? Take it out and see what is behind it. steps/ladder? clean real good in any small place. Oh and the skimmer door! We had one pool that had a tiny little crack in the door and when he found it and took it out there was a algae farm inside on the foam!

Good idea about the toothbrush. :) My pool light has been floating in the pool for like 4 days now. No steps, ladder, just plastic stairs / swim-outs.

My first thought was I had funk in the sand filter. I think I vacuumed the beginnings of the mustard into the filter 2 weeks ago thinking it was pollen.
 
Hmmm - didn't I read something a while back about algae hiding around/behind those plastic/fiberglass stairs and swim outs in IG vinyl lined pools?

Just a thought, inspect closely around those areas for any signs of algae or dirt.

Good call on doing a deep clean on the filter too!
 
Day 7 of my SLAM

So this morning I got up at 5:30 (this is getting old too btw) to do my OCLT.

I've been losing between 1.5 - 2.0 ppm of CL overnight. Last night? 4.

What I think (HOPE?) happened: Last night my neighbors did their firework bonanza. After the fireworks were done I found 4-5 orange 'splotches' in the pool; firework residue coming back down from the sky. I immediately tried to scoop it out, but it dispersed into powder and disappeared on me. So I shrugged and went to bed. I'm really hoping the step back is b/c the chlorine interacted w/ the residue in some way. This morning I see more grey 'smutch' on the bottom of the deep end. The previous night I had no such smutch; I thought I was getting closer to the finish line.

Here's hoping that tomorrow brings better results.
