Liquid Chlorine
I am switching from pool store advice/products to TFP. Opened pool 6 days ago (solid cover though 2 drainage panels). Pretty clear, some fine dirt/silt especially on floor, which has improved with daily cleaning/backwashing. Switched to liquid chlorine this year and adopting TFP. Have been unable to get chlorine levels up even after adding a lot of chlorine. Decided had algae though not much evidnce visually but figured had a lot of organic matter using up the chlorine and decided to start a SLAM after reading from this site. Tested with new Taylor 2006 kit and before SLAM:
Ph 7.4 TA 80 FC 0.4 CC 1.2 CYA 37
I added 3.1 gallons of liquid chlorine today(pool essentials 10% from WalMart) from pool calculator. 4 hours later checked and only had 0.5 FC so added again. I added 2.75 gal chlorine and supplemented with 6 oz of dichlor to equals what the calculator called for (Already used 6 gallons of chlorine which I though would last me longer than 4 hours) After adding this I checked on two K2006 taylor kits as it read 0.5 FC 20-30 minutes after adding second dosing. This did not seem correct to me. Is this poor liquid chlorine or just that much unseen organic material using that much chlorine. I just dont see how I can keep the high doses of chlorine over extended time with these results.. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it's the initial fight between chlorine and organics can be brutal. Your best bet is to stick close to the pool for an hour or two. Increase the FC to about 16 since your CYA is 40, then test again in about 15-20 minutes with good circulation. Don't wait an hour or two. For the initial part of your SLAM, you need to keep the FC level strong. Soon it will break through and begin to maintain MUCH better. Grab a cold drink and stay near the pool to babysit things in the early part and you'll see it begin to steady.
