Hi all,
first of all, thanks for all of your help on previous threads. I have been following and learning tons. Have a situation I need help with.

I have a 37000 gallon plaster pool. Been managing myself but fighting green algae on walls for the better part of a couple months. I shock with 6 balls of cal hypo and It goes away for a few days and then just comes back.

I’m pretty sure I need to slam. My water is always clear though. Just algae on walls and steps. Algae I believe is eating up my chlorine to the point where now I’m questioning whether my SWG is working.

FC 0
CC has been very high at 8-10 ever since I did a copper and scale treatment earlier this year.

If SLAM is needed. Would you agree I need to add roughly 8 gallons of 10% bleach to the pool to get FC to 20?

Thank you all once again
Louis

Definitely need to SLAM. When adding large amount of stuff, go with half the recommended amount and retest after 30min to see where things land. Then add more as needed. Do NOT use calhypo for that.

Is It possible to Slam my pool if I am only there in the morning and the evening? For example, if I start this evening at 7pm. I can test at 10. And then midnight and again at 5 am. After 5am, I need to go to work until 7pm again.

Is there a safe and easy rule of thumb or just a safe instruction I can give someone to add some bleach during the day to hold me over and maintain FC levels? I can’t tell my wife to TEST the pool but I can probably convince her to add 2 gallons of bleach!

Thanks again

If you have the good test kit then you can do that (the testing 3 times per day part). It tends to go faster if you can test a little more often. But no, there’s no rule of thumbs in pool care. You test to see what the pool needs and then you do that. No more and no less.

Maybe not TELL her - but you can show her how to test and advise how much liquid chlorine to add.
There are literally thousands of women right here on this site that test and add chlorine every single day - many are the primary pool caretakers.
I bet she wants a clear and sanitary pool just as much as you do - let her help you get it there.

Love that! I asked and she was way more willing to help than usual.

Update here:
10pm I brought up to 20 FC slam level
2am I tested and FC was 18.
Added chlorine to bring to 20.

However, CC is 15. Am I going to be able to bring that CC down with only 20 FC? Does It just take some time? I have read in these forums that in order to get CC down you have to bring FC to 5x the CC level. In that case the slam level of 20 would be insufficient.

Appreciate you all

I did a big copper and scale treatment earlier in the year. Other than that, just cal hypo shock and Muriatic acid to keep ph down. Been getting algae so now I’m in the middle of a slam where I now added liquid chlorine.

CC been high since the copper and scale treatment.

Have you been adding any other chemicals to your pool?

Normally, the sun will burn off your CCs.

The CC test is either being affected by that treatment or your test method is faulty. Assuming you’re doing it right, keep the SLAM going and don’t bother testing for CC until all the algae is gone and you are losing only 1ppm FC overnight. Someone smarter than me would have to comment on the detailed effects of that treatment on CC measurements.

How did copper get in the pool?

Your sidebar shows a SWCG. Is it functional? Fill out your signature when able.

What product did you use?
I believe It is functional but the algae was using the chlorine so the FC level has been 0 for a while other than my cal hypo shock periods.

The SWG Ic 40 Pentair. I just did an acid wash on It and the more button shows It has only used 20-40% of its life.

i had brown spots in the bottom of the pool. Im not sure where came from. Thought It was fertilizer related. I used jacks magic copper and scale treatment along with the jacks magic purple stuff. I did this after testing their products on brown spots in the floor of the pool. That product was the only one that removed those spots.

Great!

Get her setup with PoolMath on her phone or tablet. Set up your pool in PoolMath and then she can calculate the necessary chlorine additions on her own based on the test results she does.

She added 4 gallons today. Just hoping someone can shed light on what’s going on with the combined chlorine after that Jack’s magic treatment I noted above.
