what is the purpose of the flapper door on the skimmer box? 1st summer with pool so my turn fo a stupid question

Its to stop debris from floating back into the pool when the pump is not running.

It also creates a stronger flow at the top of the water to promote better skimming action.

And on mine, if it's not there the skimmer creates a vortex and sucks in air.
