Skimmer Weir broken Pentair/StaRite 8650-4

The other day my skimmer weir broke and floated into the pool . Looks like the tabs that attach it to the hinge have worn down, not surprising after 15 year s or so. Not easy to access the screws but don't want to pay someone to come out and fix it either. Way too much to install a $30 part.

1. Any hints on how the best way to fix it? From the inside the skimmer side or from the pool side?
2. What is the downside of running without one for a while? I guess they act a a way to increase the velocity of the water flowing into the skimmer to aid in junk flowing in. Anything else?

Check with INYOpools.com if they have a replacement for your pool skimmer.

You really need that door to keep schmutz from floating back into your pool from the skimmer basket when the pump is turned off.
