Skimmer Question: What's missing?

I've got a dual skimmer set up in my pool with in floor cleaning system. Sometimes, the in floor cleaners seem to miss a few spots so I've used a manual vacuum head/hose set up to suck up some areas. Up until last year, I'd just plug up the primary skimmer with a tennis ball and connect the vacuum hose to the other (since it's more centrally located and the 40' hose can reach the entirety of the pool from there).

This year, I tried the same thing for the first time but something is missing/broken from the port I used to plug the vacuum hose into. Instead of a smooth PVC surface to push the hose into, it's female threaded. It seems like some kind of insert came unthreaded and "disappeared". I did have the pool acid washed and media blasted a few months ago, so this is the first time this year I tried to vacuum since.

I'm attaching a picture. Top port is towards the pool, bottom one is the suction to the filter. The red arrow is pointing to where I feel the threads where they weren't before. It seems like there should be something threaded in here to "accept" the vacuum hose. I bought a 1 /12 inch piece of threaded PVC hose to see if would work, but it appears to be too small. Is there something that should be here? If so, what?

The end of the vac hose is getting a little chewed up from me trying to push it down into the suction port. The las pic is of a male 1.5 inch pnc adapter I thought would thread in and allow me to put the vacuum hose over the end. But the thread seem too big for the port.

If I’m not missing anything than many the previous hose end I used was just more pliable to slide in to that threaded area. This seems less likely as the primary skimmer didn’t have that threaded section in its suction port so I can insert the hose into this one.
