Signed the contract this morning, New build Orange County, CA

Everything looks great! did I read that right and that you used 135 lbs of reflective glass?

The first time, yes, 135 lbs. after concrete demo only 110 lbs. The demo vibration from tracctors caused all the pea gravel and glass to compact and dropped the glass level about 1 1/2". I had to remove all the glass, a pain, and put more pea gravel in. I sloped the gravel higher towards the edges than i did in the photo above where it was just flat. That saved about 25lbs of glass that is never touched by the flame.

I notice your wine glass, I've been to Opolo Winery, good wine, very nice people, and a beautiful property. They let us drive around the vineyard to get some views from atop the hill.

One of our favorite clubs!

OH man that looks awesome! Yea!!!!!!! What a nightmare for you but it came out great in the end.

As far as I can remember there have not been any new pools with those plasters in a while. I say put the two colors in a bag and see which one you pull out! Make sure to tell us!

You are ready for the links I share with new pool owners. The first link is something you need to go over with your PB as HE holds the warranty card.

Pool School - Start-up New Plaster

(Please note the 30 days no swimming is depending on what kind of start up your PB does. Ask him and let us know so we can guide you on that as well.)

Make sure to ask any and all questions you might have no matter how small! We have all been where you are at one point.

Do you have a test kit yet? Ask your PB what one he is getting you and let us know so we can fill in any holes.

Kim:cat:

Just ordered a TL100 kit, the XL version, salt strip test, speed mixer.

Just waiting for a plaster date. Need to figure out the color fast!

thanks for the comments on the deck!

Just got off the phone with my PB, we are set for 6:30 next Monday for plaster. I also spoke with the sub, we are going with the tropics blue, he said they broadcast all the abalone on to the surface of the pebble before final troweling. I spoke about the glass beads, he said they will do the same with the (tri-color) blue beads at an additional cost.

he told me they do not recommend adding 20% to the mix as most of the beads and shells are not on the surface.

Will update the thread next week.

Update: Plaster crew showed up at 6:30am and finished just before 11am.

We did add the NPT Azteca additive to the mix, why not right? It's a sort of high tech polymer they add to the plaster that helps to ensure the glass, abalone, and pebbles stay put, it does some other technical stuff but Brian recommended it and NPT did also, so why not, it will only help.

As mentioned my plaster guy told me they will add the abalone right before final troweling. We did purchase another bag of the abalone so (2) bags total went into the pool, we also bought a large bag of the jewelscape glass beads, dark blue, light blue, and clear. They also hand broadcast them at the same time as the abalone. The pre-acid wash pictures don't look good, I will post more tomorrow once the acid wash is done and I am filling it. Pool start up on Wednesday afternoon.

One side note learning tip for others. Appears one of my Jandy nitchless LEDs was mounted too shallow by about 1/2" so they had to recess plaster around it, a small circle so it was not buried. Appears the electrician guy cut the 1 1/2" conduit a little too short on this one. I guess the art of measuring is gone, so when your PB has the electrical done, make sure they get this right. Plaster guy told me this happens sometimes. Oh well, move forward, I never would have guess to measure this. I will post a photo tomorrow after acid wash.

Azteca for the win!

If you are going to be there for the acid wash, walk the entire pool and point out any areas that you aren't happy with. For the most part, any areas where the plaster cream is hiding the aggregate/glass will remain that way regardless of brushing and even acid startups. Don't be afraid to be critical because this will really make a huge difference once its filled.

Get as many hoses as you can to fill it as fast as possible. I like to turn the auto filler on (without the float in it) once the water is a few feet deep. There is no need for rags on the hoses either so don't obstruct the flow.

The nicheless lights shouldn't be installed until after the tile is set so the reveal for the light can be correctly determined.

Oh i will be here tomorrow also, thanks for the tip on the plaster. I have two hoses I can use, okay no rags, what about empty water bottles for floats? Needed? I guess the plaster will not get a mark from the water coming outof the hose.

Well, next pool, lol i will be an expert, not sure why they missed this depth issue other than it was "close enough" right.

No need for bottles. You can if you want though.

The plaster will be very hard by tomorrow. If the acid and pressure wash won't hurt it, you think a garden hose will?

The rag and bottle trick is for plain plaster that gets (incorrectly) filled immediately after the troweling is complete

Lol! Thx, the finish looks pretty good i saw one small trowel mark near the bottom of one step at the wall picture a small line from the edge of the trowel about 1-2" long. Plaster guy said tomorrow that will be fixed tomorrow. I know this is hand applied and will not be perfect, as much as i would like it to be. No pool is perfect and at night the lights show everything. This project has not cured my OCD but I am coming to grips that, on a project this big there are going to be issues. Looking back at December when they shot the pool 2" too shallow somebody on the board said if that's the worst thing that happens I am really lucky, made me laugh many times during the past 8+ month build. I have learned that if i look for a flaw I am going to find one.

I am guessing they need to be careful, not to splash any of the acid on the pavers, that would be bad! Perhaps plastic is a good idea.
