Sight Glass Stuck

Hello, apologies if this has been covered in another thread, but I didn't find anything in a quick search.

The sight glass on my DE filter is very filthy and I need to get it off in order to clean it, but it is very stuck. I haven't sprayed it with anything to break it loose, but didn't want to if I could get it off otherwise. I've even tried using my plumber's wrench over a rubber band to try to get grip on it and ended up just shredding the rubber band. Any tips other than shattering this thing out and replacing?

Al,

Welcome to TFP... A Great resource for all your pool maintenance questions... :shark:

Other than what you have already tried, I can't recommend anything different.

What I would suggest is that you buy a new one before "really" trying to take the old one out.

I know that based on experience... :p

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.

Don't hammer. Use a strap wrench.

Is the sight glass plastic or glass?

I wouldn't try to break it out. It woud probably not work because the threaded part would probably end up left in with no way to grip it. The plastic multiport would probably be damaged.

If it's plastic, you can use ChannelLock type pliers to grip it but don't squeeze too hard.

If it's plastic, you could drill a hole through it then put a metal rod through it to unscrew.

If it's glass or plastic, you can get some epoxy putty to cover the sight glass in a non round way. Then you have something to grip. Don't get the epoxy on the multiport. Maybe use masking tape to protect the multiport. Allow the epoxy overnight to cure.
