Side-suction hose gets stuck in skimmer

You guys are the BEST. I've learned so much here over the past few weeks! I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but I turned OFF the drains in the floor and left the skimmer on and got the vacuum running. Seemed to be going well, but after an hour or so the hose gets curled up in the skimmer basket. If I turn down the pump too much, the vacuum doesn't move. If i turn it up too much, the hose ends up in the skimmer and obviously gets stuck. I have a spillway from spa to pool, so I run it at 1700 all day and switch to high for the vacuum. The pic shows where the side suction is in relation to the skimmer.

Welcome to TFP.

That is just bad design putting the vacuum connection close to the skimmer. Consider building some type of skimmer guard to keep the hose out of it.
