Should I turn the heater off while slamming?

Hey MPG !!!! How’s it been ?

I would occasionally turn the heater on to flush the old water out.

The same goes for any water features / in floor cleaners etc.

Also, pull your ladder if you have one. They can hold 2 gallons of old water in each rail.

Water is always circulating through a heater even when off unless you have a manual bypass valve.

Isnt some trapped in the coils while off and using the internal bypass ? (Newer models)
