Doing a big L shaped vinyl inground pool. I dont really understand if i'm supposed to put in a sump pump. i had to leave the hole dug and open over winter and we got some major rains here on the west coast. I thought my ground water was higher, but even with the big rains, there was rarely water around the outside edge of the pool. it did fill up after the rains though and would take a bit to dry back out. attached is a photo if it helps.

also, what do i do for a sump pump? am i just kind of running a 1.5" pipe under the drain lines and surrounding with some gravel/drainrock under neat the drains... then running that pipe out to the concrete patio so a pump can be attached there? the pump itself doesn't go under the pool i assume?

Liner pools can have well points installed around the pool to drain away ground water and keep the liner from floating.

Depending on the topography the well points can naturally drain to daylight or they can have submersible pumps dropped in them to pump water away.

is it better to put in vertical culverts and drop a sump into it or can i just run a 1.5" pvc with holes drilled in it (perhaps wrapped with drainage sleeve) from under the hopper to my equipment pad and then use a pump to suck the water out if needed?

I don’t think putting pipe under the hopper buys you anything.

General concept is to drain water away from the sides of the liner to lower ground water level around the pool.
