Shock when opening salt water pool

5ppm of chlorine in any form is 5ppm of chlorine. (Etc etc). None 'works better' than the other.

Whether you add only chlorine, or chlorine plus CYA, or chlorine plus calcium, depends on what you're trying to do with that pool.

Liquid chlorine is usually the cheapest.

Liquid chlorine to raise the FC up yo the correct FC/CYA ratio.

You have to understand the pros and cons of each chlorine type. When I open after the long winter I always slam the pool, whether the water is clear or not. Since my fill water has no detectable calcium levels I use cal hypo to slam my pool. I like that I can buy a 55 lb bucket of it and it doesn't degrade in my garage like liquid chlorine would. Last year I needed to replace my salt cell in the middle of the season. I was really glad I had that cal hypo while I waited for the new cell to arrive.
Many people can't do the same thing I do since they have high calcium in their fill water. As I said in the beginning you have to understand everything you add.
