Quoting a pool and spa build and a builder I am considering is quoting one set of equipment. He is stating the automation will allow valves to be opened and closed to operate one at a time.

He said he doesn’t understand why pool builders put in two of everything when automation allows one set.

Thoughts?

That is true. Pools with integrated spas operate that way.
In your part of the country, the spa is closed for winter when the pool is.

If you want a year around spa, get a standalone spa.

Thanks for input

I was planning to run spa year round and winterize pool

We have seen some try it. You must have full back up generator power sources.

For year round spa, use a standalone spa.
Yes plan to have backup power source and plan to insulate the pipes with spray insulation to try to help.

Thanks for your input!

That rarely works.

Get a standalone spa for winter use.

Because too expensive to heat or something else?
Yes, it will be expensive to heat. And it will be expensive to be fixing things.

Residential pool equipment are not made to work in the cold. O rings shrink and leak in the cold. That is how we lost the Space Shuttle. Heaters produce corrosive condensation in the cold. Heater Condensation - Further Reading If you get a hard freeze things can freeze even with water circulating.

I give you 3 years before you get fed up with all the problems during the winter and just close the spa.

Thanks for your input. If I keep water at minimum 70 sound like will help condensation.

Will take your feedback in mind. Hate the look of above ground hot tub and you warned me :).

Two sets of equipment serving two separate bodies of water will simplify closing the pool for the winter while keeping the spa open.

Otherwise your builder will have to give careful thought to how the pool is winterized with shared equipment and pipes and valves.

Thanks, what would you do yourself?
