Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster...
I've been trying to clean this pool for 9 days. It was neglected for years. There was a huge amount of algae/leaves at the bottom. Not the normal kind of slimy algae - this stuff was so old it had consolidated into tough mats several inches thick.
After finally getting everything off the pool floor, (took days), I adjusted the alkalinity and pH and began shocking it with liquid chlorine. I've used 30 gallons of 10% sodium hypo so far... which is a lot more than I normally need for a green pool.
It's finally holding fc overnight, and I'm pretty sure it's all dead, but the water just will not clear up. I ran the filter for several days, backwashing every day, but it never improved. I used some hth drop out flocculant, recirculated a few hours then let it sit for 2 days.... It's still in the same condition - the flocculant did not work.
What the heck?
