Separate Shut Off Valve for Pool to Main Inlet

Is it necessary to have a separate shut off valve from pool to main inlet?

Currently has a shut off at the side off the not connected to the main inlet.

Welcome to TFP.
Members that close their pool in winter may have a shut off on the suction side because it helps them lock in air in the pipes.
It is not a requirement if you do not close your pool which is unlikely in AZ.
If I misunderstood your question - provide a photo to help clarify what valve you are referring to. Thanks.
