Sand pump

Hey guys, its my 1st year trying to get our pool running and in good shape since my father hasn't done well and it was full of uncontrollable algae last year. My question right now tho is I was told the sand in our pump had to changed every couple years. Need to know if that's true and if so, best sand and amount? Our label has come off but Ill share pics of what I have/what it looks like. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Under normal use sand in the pool filter never needs changing, unless some odd chemical concoction has been used in the pool and gums up the sand. Pool stores sometimes promote the idea of needing sand changed so they can sell new sand.
BUT... that said-Your sand can greatly benefit from a good cleaning!!
