My neighbors just took his pool down and gave me this heywood sand filter and pump, was wondering if it is any good for my 18' intext ultra pool

Existing pump and filter are just the intex one that came with the pool, I think it is the 2100 gph sand filter systemIt should work.
Show us pics of your existing setup.
Was connected to a Colman 18' pool. I have all the adapters to make the intex fit to 1.5 pvc thoughDepends if your suction and return pipes can handle the larger flow of the pump.
Hook it up and see how it works. You can always go back if there are problems.
Although you will find the Intex fittings will not work with standard schedule 40 connections.
Did your neighbor have this rig connected to an Intex pool?

So I would be better off using my intext pump with the heywood sand filter? The only downside really is power use. Your Intex pump (if it's a .24 HP) will only use about 1.8 amps running. The Hayward will be 11 amps if I read that label correctly. You could use your Intex pump with that larger sand filter for an increase in GPM while using the same power.
I saw a difference of 265 GPH using my dual (Intex .24 HP) pump setup with the Hayward 21" sand filter vs the 12" that came with the pool. I sold my 2 speed 3/4 HP pump as it used a lot more power in my setup than the dual Intex (about 12 amps vs 3.8 with the two pumps running) and flowed less (albeit before I swapped in the 21" filter).
Thanks for all that info. I will try it that way in the spring when I reopen the pool. I am peicing all the stuff i need to hard plumb it all over the winter time aswell since We only have maybee another couple weeks where the pool may get used.Yes, you can certainly use your Intex pump with the larger sand filter. It will improve the system GPH numbers for sure. You'll also have the timer on the pump to use..I suspect 8-10 hours/day will be plenty. Your neighbour gave you about $700-800 of gear for free btw
If you do install the skimmer, use the Hayward 1.5" pool return fitting as well...it will improve flow. Or you can modify the Intex fitting.
You can unscrew the the nozzle housing (on the pool side of return) and then firmly pull out the plastic venturi piece (towards pool water) . Air injection (aeration) won't work after that, however it's not something we need...more of a marketing thing IMHO.
I also opened up the Hayward nozzle about .25". Replacing the pool return with the Hayward bits was worth about 25 GPH...not a huge difference but it does reduce the system head for sure.
Intex "aerator" water return fitting:

With venturi core removed. Doing this disables aeration, but the fitting won't leak. The water "jet" effect into your pool would be reduced but flow will be higher.

Note the small size of the venturi ID...it is well designed, but will cost you some GPH.

Hayward water return fitting swapped in. It comes with their above ground pool skimmer kit and has 1 1/2" MPT threads. This setup improved flow from 1765 (with the Intex return in place) to 1800 GPH for an improvement of 35 GPH. The "jet" effect to induce some swirl into the pool water is very good with this mod'd Hayward pool return...definitely better than the Intex setup. This swirl allows the skimmer in turn to work more efficiently.
