Pretty simple to check how much sand is needed, where the filter starts to get smaller is the line. You fill above that "shoulder" and you lose sq footage of filtering area.

I have never thought about it that way but that's not bad.

I think they will recommend slightly less than that (about 2/3 works, too) and the exact number of pounds can be found at their website.
