Does anyone have a recommendation for the best salt to use? Some product reviews mention staining of the liner, but this may have been cause by dumping a bag in one spot and letting it sit for a while.

Any plain salt will do. I use water softener salt.
Only brand that has had staining issues is Clorox. We do not recommend using that product.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.
The biggest thing is to make sure the salt doesn't have anything in it (i.e. rust inhibitors, etc.). Most any brand of pool salt will be fine, and a lot of people use Solar Salt.
The only time I've heard of salt staining anything is when someone used salt with some additive in it.

Also, the help article clip shown below mentions raising the salt level. This is a new pool, so do you recommend water softener salt for the initial salting? Salt
The best thing to use to raise the salt level is water softener salt. Look for salt that is 99.4% pure or better and doesn’t have any rust inhibitor or other additives.
