Salt, Cyanuric Acid and Pool Proof

I have a vinyl lined, 12,000 gal salt pool. I run the filter and chlorine generator 24/7.
I added Pool Proof (borate harmonizer) which claims it will cut down your sanitizer usage, make your ph and alk levels play nice, etc.
my question is, With the borate harmonizer doing what it is suppose to do, do I need CYA. As of now I am reading zero cya. Chlorine reading is always good and crystal clear water.
Thanks pool people!

 Welcome to TFP!!!

1. Why are your running the pump and SWG 24/7?
2. TFP does not subscribe to the presence of borates reducing your need for proper chlorine levels. And if you added it without first lowering your TA significantly, you are likely to have rising pH issues
3. CYA and borates have nothing to do with each other. The CYA is needed to protect the FC from the sun as well as to buffer the harshness of the chlorine.

What test kit are you using?
What are all your test results?

Hi, thanks. I run 24/7 for the filtration and to keep from having to remember to turn it off and on. Also, I’ve been advised by a few in the know, it’s better for the pump motor. I know, different schools of thought on that one.
I use a Taylor K6000 test kit. PH, back down to 7.6 after borate add. Alk is 100. Hardness is a tad low. No cya. Salt at 2800. FC hovers at 3. No combined chlorine at the moment.

Well, they are not really "in the know" ;)

There is no such thing as a K6000 ... do you mean K2006?

Well since you are willing to pay for the electricity, it is clear that the SWG is producing the enough FC to overcome the HUGE losses to the sun that occur when there is no CYA.
But, a FC of 3ppm with 0 CYA is extremely harsh on skin, hair, suits, etc.
I would recommend you raise the CYA up to about 50ppm and then likely dial the SWG way back if you are going to keep running 24/7. I think adding a timer would quickly pay for itself.

Yes, k2006, my bad. OK, you’ve kind of cleared that up. I just wanted to make sure the 2 didn’t conflict and something weird happen if I added cya. Thanks so much for your input.
And there hasn’t been all that much sun to eat up the FC here in not so sunny Michigan.
