Safe to operate pump with skimmer weir broken?

Any potential issues? Found a broken weir door, and trying to get replacement...

Its fine to run the pump without a weir. Just take the broken one out, or make sure it doesn't stick in the upright position and block flow to the skimmer.

So this begs the question - what is the point in the weir then??

When the pump shuts off, the foam in the weir makes it float, thereby trapping anything floating inside the skimmer.

Half the pools in the US don't have operating weir gates...

I have two rent houses that did not have weir gates when I bought them. At the time, I did not have a clue they were even missing. Once I found this website, I installed new gates and can say that it really helps with the skimming action.

Without a weir, the water in the skimmer is fairly stable.. With a working weir, it kind of pulses... In a way, it keeps the water in the skimmer a little lower than the water in the pool, so water is continually running "down hill" into the skimmer. Maybe not technically accurate, but you get the idea..

Worth installing a new one..

Great responses. The message I am receiving is don't freak out, but get a new one when possible...no pump damage, but better quality skim with weir operating.
