Riverside, CA - Backyard Overhaul

Holy cow, that’s a ton of framing!!! Your Wanger must be tired.

Why couldn’t you use trusses?

The hip girder would have been 54' long and probably 4-5 ply... Not really practical. There really isn't a good mono hip securement option to tie into the existing house either, at least not one I was willing to entertain on a whim.

This was enough of a struggle with my engineer...

That’s still a big pergola!! And, by the looks of it, the fireplace will definitely be contributing to some serious global greenhouse gas emissions....

Will you make the fireplace a dual heating one? That way they could use wood if they wanted............not sure why anyone would want to but some people like the sound and smell.............me? I hate the clean up afterwards LOL

That is a lot of pouring!!!! Glad to see your frames held up to it. Like there was any doubt!

Yes, this will be able to burn wood and I believe they intend to do so. I won't lie though, I'll be a little nervous the first couple times with all of that wood framing around it

You might want to install a small push button emergency switch next to that fireplace that goes right to local firehouse and sets off their alarm....

Always the firefighters that are biggest firebugs!

I used to work at the station down the street that would have gone to this house, but I'm not there anymore.... Somebody else's problem now!

Check out Rodney the cement truck driver! When he showed up I asked him if he was comfortable driving all the way back to where the fireplace footing was. It went something like this:

Me: "How do you feel about driving back there?"

Rodney: "Ok."

Me: "Do you want to take a look first?"

Rodney: "No. Just make sure I don't hit anything or roll the truck."

Me:

It was a tight fit but he got it there without issue. I even won a bet in the process since no one else thought the truck could fit back there!

 to Rodney... He even jumped in and helped when one of my forms lost its integrity.

Have you worked with Rodney before? I love watching a person drive big trucks that KNOW what they are doing. It is like a dance.

NOW start talking about the form.........what happened??? How did y'all save it?

Are you one of those lucky/skilled people that can just look at a bolt, nut, etc and know what size it is? Me? I grab at least 3 different sizes to make sure I have the right one. My husband.......he grabs the correct sized tool every time......drives me nuts but comes in handy.

Never seen him before. He just one of the drivers for a very large company so I'll probably never see him again. Most of my experiences with these guys has been mediocre at best.

As for the form, one of the support braces cracked and allowed the screws to pull out. This caused a bow in the panels of about 2". I repaired as best as I could with a couple lag bolts. Once the concrete set up enough I stripped that section of the form and shaved the bulge off while it was still somewhat workable.

Never thought I'd be talking about shaving bulges here on the forum but its fitting with all the Wanger talk...

Speaking of....we haven’t had any good shots of your Wanger recently. What happened, you gave him the holiday off or is he just being a slacker?

Dude, you should be more careful with your Wanger!! While I do believe experience is the best teacher, “experiencing” a saw or nail gun can potentially result in life altering injuries. Give your Wanger a hug from us....

So I guess we can all say that you now have a pierced Wanger...I’m sure the ladies at the local bar will find him a bit more interesting now ;)
