I realize that this is an old thread discussion I stumbled upon, but for this poster and anyone interested, Dawn is perfectly safe in the pool, and, it does not actually KILL the bugs, it prevents them from being able to swim, which in turn makes getting to oxygen impossible. Dawn, or any other detergent, does not block, nor prevent oxygen from anything. Starving something from oxygen would require removing the oxygen, in which case it wouldn't be water any linger. Just hydrogen.

... No. Critters get dissolved dioxygen in the water to breathe, standard O2. Critters with gills are not stripping water of its oxygen molecule. If you put a fish or another water breathing creature in pure distilled water it would suffocate. Why else would an aquarium need a bubbler? If you were correct they would need ventilators to remove the explosive hydrogen. Aquarium explosions would be up there with furnace explosions as unfortunate catastrophic maintenance failures.

I don't even know what this thread is about, I just had to chime in on this glaring inaccuracy.
 
I have Borates. I don’t think it discourages bugs. I love the way my pool TFP pool looks at night with the light on but I’m going to stop leaving it on overnight because of the bugs. They are all usually dead but Then I have to spend 20 minutes Nettie g them up.


So far plenty of bugs and two mouseseses or mices or just mice.
 
Swampwoman and I both bought Skill It. We were both having wasp problems (actually, I think hers were bees). Found something somewhere that said that this particular algaecide changes the surface tension of the water so the bugs like wasps and bees could not float but instead would drown. The website actually has something about if you’re planning to use it as a pesticide. Thought it was worth a try.

I put just a couple ounces in my pool and within a day or two I had a ton of dead wasps floating around. Even better, I have hardly seen any since then. They must’ve spread the word! I spent the entire afternoon in my pool today and not one wasp visited. Usually I’m killing six or seven while I’m in the pool!
 
I will file that one away for a rainy bug day. My bugs aren’t wasp or bees but little tiny bugs that I believe are attracted to the light. I also arrogantly believe my water is so clear they think they are flying to the light when they are shocked by hitting the perfectly clear TFP water they didn’t know was there.......
