Return line leak

Bought a house with an inground pool. Discovered there is a leak in the return line just below ground surface near filter. Dug it up. Cut pipe to repair now water is flowing nonstop fron pipe. Why and how to stop it??!!

Go to the pool and block the return fitting with a rag. You also need to block the skimmer as water will flow from there as well.

Tennis balls are a pretty good option to block water flowing through your skimmers.

Thank you! We did that (skimmer)and it still kept running... you said return, ? So where water goes back into the pool...lordy! I thought about that and put the plug cap on the one by steps. But the other one by deep end...i didn't know HOW block it. It looks like a double head spout pipe thing coming out of the wall.. but

anyhow we just watched water flow out on the ground rest of nite. I kept checking my email for notifications for here and never got one. Got up this morning and searched for my post and finally found it and a couple of responses. Been nice to seen these yesterday.
